The Basics of Play
The primary objective in golf is to play a ball from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the Rules. Each player must play with a conforming ball and is allowed to carry up to 14 clubs in their bag, a rule that encourages strategic selection of equipment.
Teeing Off
Each hole begins from a designated teeing area. Players must tee their ball between, but not forward of, the tee markers. Playing from outside this area in match play results in no penalty, but the opponent may ask for the stroke to be replayed; in stroke play, teeing off outside the teeing ground incurs a two-stroke penalty.
Fair Play
One of golf’s core principles is playing the ball as it lies. This means not moving, bending, or breaking anything fixed or growing, except in taking a stance or making a swing. However, there are exceptions, such as movable obstructions (e.g., a loose branch) that can be removed.
Hazards and Penalty Areas
Golf courses feature hazards, including bunkers and penalty areas (formerly known as water hazards), that present additional challenges. When a ball lands in a bunker, players cannot ground their club before the stroke. In penalty areas, players have the option to play the ball as it lies, or take a penalty stroke and drop a ball outside the area, maintaining the point where the ball last crossed the edge of the penalty area.
The Putting Green
Once on the putting green, players may mark and lift their ball to clean it. A ball must be played from where it comes to rest unless it moves after being placed, in which case it’s returned without penalty. Players should also avoid stepping on another’s putting line and must remove the flagstick or have it attended when putting.
